Tallinn
Tallinn is
the capital and the most populous city in Estonia, and is located in the
northern part of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic
Sea, and it is the most industrial, financial, cultural and educational centre
of Estonia.
The history
of Estonia isn’t so long, but I think it is something very interesting to know,
and to compare it with the history of other countries, as Spain. In one of my
trips I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful country, and the guide of a
free tour told us very interesting things about Estonia, and specially about Tallinn.
Estonia,
due of its location, always was a country wished for other territories, and it
always was under the leadership of them. During World War II, Estonia was first
occupied by the Red Army and annexed into the USSR in 1940. Then, it was occupied
by Nazy Germany from 1941 to 1944. After the German retreat in 1944, the city
was occupied again by the Soviets, and it became the capital city of the
Estonian SSR within the Soviet Union. In 1991, an independent democratic
Estonian nation was established again, and Tallinn became the capital of the
independent country once again on 20th August 1991.
I had the
opportunity to visit the Old Town of Tallinn, that is one of the best persevered
medieval cities in Europe, and it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I
think it is amazing! It is so beautiful.
For me, one
of the best places in Tallinn is the “Kohtu Lookout”, when you can see all the
old town. It is a small part of the city, but I think it is amazing, and you
feel as in the medieval era!
If you have
the opportunity to travel, I suggest you to visit this city. And to have lunch
in III Draakon, it is as a medieval bar! There isn’t electricity, there are
only candles, and you can eat traditional soup and pies. I loved it!
